A trauma is defined as any experience, situation or series of events that are emotionally painful and distressing, that overwhelm an individual’s ability to cope. When someone is triggered by a traumatic memory in their daily life, part of the brain is still responding emotionally and physically to the original trauma. Traumas may have a lasting negative impact on your life if left untreated. Whether it be a single incident trauma, an early relationship/developmental trauma, the loss of a loved one, or a series of ongoing traumas or issues, EMDR quickly gets to the source of the original trauma. 

HOW DOES EMDR WORK? 

EMDR helps the brain tap into its own ability to self-heal without having to relive or recollect the details of a traumatic event. Unlike traditional talk therapy, where success depends on what a client is able or willing to share with a therapist, EMDR helps clients recall distressing memories in a less emotional way, thus enabling less painful processing of disturbing information.

THE PROCESS 

EMDR utilizes several different types of bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tappers, tapping) to help clients access memories stored in the subconscious. This mind-body method is supported by research and facilitates the safe processing of traumatic memory. It has the effect of moving psychological memory to objective memory, thereby desensitizing the memory’s impact on the individual's current life.
